· Of Toil and Tenderness ·
My use of photography stands as an ode to romantic resilience, woven with threads of folklore, familial bonds, and the looming specter of industrial progression within the Midwest. Rooted in the simplicity of familiar rural settings, I seek to capture a world where the mystical and the mundane are embedded. Magical realism becomes a vehicle for me to explore the dynamics between humanity and nature within the intimate scale of my family’s property—portraying the land not merely as a backdrop, but as a sentient character with its own energy and history. The presence of industrial progression casts a shadow over these narratives. My parents’ small pond ecosystem, bordered by cattails, clover, willow, and patches of apple trees, sets them apart from neighboring fields and the consistent hum of combines that surround their property. Their home stands as a testament to the disappearing rural landscape, while acknowledging the pressures of this resistance.
Photography becomes a delicate act of inventing stories while preserving the reality of people and place. Through a soft, painterly approach, I invite viewers to contemplate the blurred boundaries between the tangible and the imagined—elevating acts of toil and tenderness into built narratives that are rooted in honesty. I mythologize myself, the influences of family, and our surroundings—showcasing the gifts, flaws, and lessons that continue to unfold from the land where I grew up.
