White Bellies
White Bellies is an artist book that combines poetry, cyanotypes, letterpress printing, and fish leather to imagine the sensory world of freshwater fish. Part ecological elegy and part field guide, I aim to unsettle human-centered ways of seeing and follow instinctual cycles of migration, reproduction, and survival. Through poetry and material processes, the book follows species behavioral patterns while reflecting on Great Lakes habitat disruption.
The material components of the book extend the world of the poem. Each cyanotype was printed and developed using water patterns from Lake Michigan, embedding the physical presence of the lake. The whitefish leather cover, sourced from Lake Superior, was produced through a workshop hosted by Wisconsin Sea Grant. Together, these materials connect the poetry book to the watersheds and species it considers.
Edition of 1, 4 x 6.
